I'm a photo geek who eats, sleeps, and breathes photography...and loves to help others discover and learn this craft.

I got here on an interesting path. My Dad is a photographer, so I grew up surrounded by cameras and pictures. As a youngster, I was photographed more than most. As I grew, I was recruited to help him on photo shoots and in the darkroom. I didn't really appreciate it until I studied photography in college as part of a photojournalism and public relations degree.

My interest simmered for a while and really boiled over when I joined the Army Reserves as a photojournalist. That cemented my love for photography and photojournalism. I most enjoy telling other peoples stories with my camera and words.

For the next 20 years, I worked as a photographer in a number of different capacities. I freelanced mostly, but as a communications guy who knew how to handle a camera, you'll find my photographs in many of my brochures, posters and other products. I was always the guy who wanted to take the picture.

I discovered the teaching component almost by accident, but when I found it, I knew I was at home. One weekend when I was bored, I founded a club for photography enthusiasts. I just wanted to find a few other photo geeks to shoot with. The club attracted a wide range of skills and experience, and I found myself coaching informally. That got me thinking, I really enjoy helping people learn photography, maybe I should try to do this formally.

I founded PhotoTour DC, a company that teaches beginners to enthusiasts the principles of photography on walking workshops around DC's picturesque locations. I am still amazed at the growth. I've literally taught several thousand students to take great pictures during our 4-hour workshops.

I remember on my first teaching workshop, I thought 'this is what I was born to do.' When you learn to love and appreciate photography, that's when I've had a successful day.

On most weekends, you will still find me sharing my passion with small clusters of photographers in the DC area. On PhotoCoach Pro, I try to help as many people as I can. And yes, that would include you.
